All tequila begins with one legendary plant, the blue Weber agave. Spoiler, this isn’t a cactus (though it looks like one!), it’s a spiky succulent that takes up to7–10 years to fully mature in the Mexican sun.

The heart of the plant, known as the piña, is harvested, cooked, and transformed into the spirit we know as tequila. You might have noticed the piña emblem designed in our brand logo!

But here’s the catch, by law, a spirit only needs to be made with 51% blue agave sugars to be labelled as “tequila.” The other 49% can be made up of cheap fillers like cane sugar or corn syrup. These are called mixto tequilas and most likely the result of that headache after one too many cheap shots!

The Tequila Making Process

Here’s how agave becomes tequila:

1.     Harvesting Skilled jimadores carefully slice away the spiky leaves to reveal the sweet, starchy heart of the agave, that legendary piña we were talking about! At HACIEN, even our bottle shape pays tribute to this craft, inspired by the precise slicing technique used by the jimadores.  

2.     Cooking The piñas are roasted to unlock those natural sugars.

3.     Fermentation Yeast works its magic, transforming sweetness into alcohol.

4.    Distillation Distillation refines the spirit into smooth, vibrant tequila. By law, 100% agave tequila must be distilled and bottled in Mexico to guarantee its authenticity and quality.
